Welcome back to Cork & Barrel's Wine Class Series. In this series we are sampling some red wines specially picked for a Halloween theme.

The tradition of Halloween originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. In the 8th century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints. Soon afterward, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows' Eve, or simply Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, wearing costumes, Halloween movies and eating treats.

By the 1920s and 1930s, Halloween had become a secular but community-centered holiday, with parades and town-wide Halloween parties as the featured entertainment. A new American tradition was born. Today Americans spend more than $11 billion annually on Halloween, making it the country’s second largest commercial holiday after Christmas.

The wines chosen for this class play on the Halloween theme with creepy labels, inky juice, and hearts of dark fruits. Pair any of these rich red wines with your favorite chocolate candy or your costume! Hope to see you there.
